2021 Year End Review

2021 has been an eventful year. The covid-19 pandemic continues. Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin, and Space-X each launched their first civilian missions. Environmental catastrophes have been widespread. This is my 2021 year end review. I’ll review the most important things I learned small business-wise, my best/most useful sewing tips/skills and my favorite projects of 2021. I’ll also give you a heads up on my plans for the new year.

Small Business

The most important things I learned in 2021 from a small business perspective have been search engine optimization and copywriting. I took some courses from Udemy on these topics and as the saying goes, you don’t know what you don’t know. I’ve been putting my new-found knowledge to good use to write better posts. I look forward to doing a better job at writing about things you (my audience) want to know about.

Sewing Skills/Tips/Tutorials

The most useful sewing skill I learned in 2021 was how to quilt-as-you-go. You may have read about my first attempt to use this technique and all the mistakes that I made. Fortunately, my second QAYG project went much better.

I wrote 4 sewing tutorials in 2021: how to replace a zipper, how to sew a desk mat, upcycling an old raincoat into a new purse and how to sew an e-reader case. My desk mats get daily use and wish I had sewn them before my desk became damaged by my computer mouse. Upcycling is the kind of project is something most advanced beginner sewers could tackle. I love the results.

Favorite Projects

I love hiking and camping so it may not be a surprise that my favorite sewing projects of 2021 are hiking related. My Rezac Pack and Stitchback TH50 backpacks turned out great and I look forward to testing them out on the trails. Hiking adjacent was learning to sew my own bras and underwear. I sewed some fantastic sport bras using Pin-Up Girls patterns and plan to sew some wicking underwear using the Melly Sews Panties Tutorial. I also had a lot of fun crafting my own Christmas cards and tops.

Planning Ahead

The end of one year is a good time to starting planning for the next year. I’m planning to do some more project reviews in 2022. Ideally I’d also create more Sewn By Tanya tutorials. In both cases I have some special projects in mind already.

In the fall of 2021 I purchased an additional course pack for small business bloggers from Ultimate Bundles. Topics include content creation, marketing and branding, monetization, planning and organizing, and SEO and traffic and social media. I also purchased some small business books in 2020 and 2021 that I need to read. I’m looking forward to continuing my learning in 2022 and making my blog more effective. I may well find more small business topics to blog about too.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2022!
