Learning to sew by hand? Want to start with an easy and practical project? Amy Karol wrote a book you may be interested in. This post is a “Sew A Bag” book review.
Introduction
My hand sewing experience is limited to small, decorative projects and mending. I wanted to try sewing something more practical by hand. I bought “Sew A Bag: A Beginners Guide To Hand Sewing” by Amy Karol.
What’s the book about?
Sew A Bag teaches you the basics for sewing projects by hand. There are two main sections.
1) Tools, Materials, Stitches & Knots
This section is approximately half the book. Learn the essential tools you need for hand sewing and how optional tools may benefit you. Read about selecting the fabric, thread and needles for your project. Learn five basic stitches and how to secure your thread at the beginning and end of a line of stitches.
2) Sew A Basic Clutch
This section is approximately half the book. Apply the skills you learned in the first section of this book by hand sewing your own clutch. Make a pattern, cut the fabric, learn which stitches are best for each step. Add a closure and embellishment then your clutch is ready to use.
Conclusion
“Sew A Bag ” by Amy Karol is well written and photographed. Novice sewers will appreciate the thoughtful approach and detailed descriptions. The numerous photographs make it easy to understand how to form the stitches and knots and sew a clutch. Sewers who follow along and make a clutch or other bag will improve their hand sewing skills. Apply the skills and techniques you learn to many other projects. I’m looking forward to hand sewing a clutch on my next trip.
