This project is for personal use only.

For the purposes of my review, I’m going to summarize the basic steps, tell you what I did differently (if anything) and share my general thoughts about sewing the project.

Introduction

Zipper pouches come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The In Sewing Times Slide Pen Pouch is an easy beginner project for a zippered pencil and/or pen pouch that stands up on it’s own. The top portion of the pouch slides down to make it easier to access the contents. The finished pouch is 6.25 inches wide by 8 inches high by 2.4 inches deep (16 cm x 20 cm x 6 cm).

Step 0 Gather Materials

Quilting weight cotton, firm interfacing, medium interfacing and a zipper are required. Light weight canvas, home decore fabrics similar in weight to quilting weight cotton and broadcloth could also be used. I used quilting weight cotton, card-like interfacing and medium interfacing. My zipper was longer than the recommended length and I decided not to shorten it.

Materials
Step 1 Main Body

I prepared the four main pieces then sewed my zipper to the pairs of exterior and interior panels according to the instructions. My narrow zipper foot made working with my narrow zipper easier. Take care to pull your zipper out of the way as instructed.

Step 2 Box Bottom

I followed the instructions for boxing the bottom of my slide pen pouch.

Closing the turning gap and top-stitching along the zipper complete the main pouch.

Step 3 Slide Panel

I sewed my slide panel according to the instructions.

Sewing my side panel to my main pouch was easy. Here are some photos of my finished slide pen pouch.

Conclusion

The In Sewing Times Slide Pen Pouch was a quick, easy and fun sew. I’ve never had a pencil case that stood up by itself before and the slide feature is clever. The lower your slide the top, the easier it is to reach inside. My slide pen pouch is the expected size at 6.25 inches wide by 8 inches high by 2.4 inches deep (16 cm x 20 cm x 6 cm). It holds more than my fabric covered cans and is easy to slip into a bag when on the go. This versatile slide pen pouch could be used to store and transport a variety of tall, narrow objects. I’m also curious about whether fusible fleece could be used instead of the firm interfacing. I may make another slide pen pouch and try this substitution.
