During the height of summer it’s important to have access to potable water. Carrying your own from home is a good way to achieve when you’re outside. This post is a water bottle carrier free pattern roundup.
Introduction
During the recent heat wave, extreme heat warnings were issued in my city. Many neighboring communities were also negatively affected by the extreme heat. Heat related emergencies can be avoided and the most important step for doing so is drinking plenty of cool fluids. Taking a bottle of water with you when you’re running errands or participating in outdoor activities is good. If it doesn’t fit in your bag or purse and you don’t want to use either a larger bag and/or backpack or hydration pack, a water bottle carrier may be just the thing for you. Here are five examples of free water bottle carrier projects.
1) Learn Create Sew – Water Bottle Holder
This free, beginner tutorial features a PDF download with multiple sizes and a detailed video tutorial. You may choose to cut your fabric so that your water bottle holder fits snugly or more loosely. The fixed length fabric strap can be made short for a handheld style water bottle carrier or long for a crossbody style water bottle carrier. An optional drawstring closure prevents your water bottle falling out.
2) Melly Sews – Sew A Water Bottle Holder
This free, beginner tutorial, describes how to make a water bottle carrier for any size of water bottle you have on hand. The fixed-length fabric, crossbody strap is sized for kids, but taller people can easily make the strap longer. A fusible fleece layer adds structure to this project.

4) The Folk Art Factory – Throwback Thursday Water Bottle Carrier
This free, beginner tutorial, describes how to make a water bottle carrier for any size of water bottle. The project includes a layer of insulating heat proof wadding. Quilting the wadding to the exterior and interfacing the interior add structure. Webbing and metal hardware are used to make the adjustable, removable crossbody strap and strap anchors. Snaps hold the top of this water bottle carrier closed and prevents your water bottle falling out.
5) Life Sew Savory – Free Water Bottle Holder with Phone Pocket
This free, advanced beginner tutorial, has a PDF pattern download and describes how to make a water bottle carrier for a 33 ounce (1000 mL) water bottle. This project features an exterior, zippered smartphone pocket with a slip pocket and an interior ID pocket. The removable crossbody strap can be made adjustable. The drawstring closure prevents your drink and any other items in the main compartment from falling out easily.
Conclusion
Water bottle carriers are another type of sewing project that is easy to customize and gift. Desirable features may vary according the personal preferences of the user and the skills of the sewer. These five projects gave me lots of ideas about what my preferred water bottle carrier could look like. Maybe you’re inspired too.
