On March 11, 2020 the World Health Organization declared covid-19 a pandemic. The world has certainly changed a lot since then. As of March 10, 2022, there have been 3,340,328 cases and 37,069 deaths in Canada. That’s roughly equivalent to 1.2 times the population of Toronto, Ontario, falling ill and nearly the entire population of Bradford, Ontario passing away. For those of you who live in the United States of America, that’s ~88% of Los Angeles, California getting sick and more than Monrovia, California passing away. The United States is far more populous and I know covid-19 rates are even higher there. The global statistics of over 452 million cases and over 6.0 million deaths  are even more staggering. It’s difficult to fathom that a population just over 1.4 times of the United States has contracted this disease and that nearly 2 times the population of Los Angeles, California has passed away.

Covid-19 vaccines have been developed and are being distributed globally. Unfortunately vaccine access is limited in many developing parts of the world. Many Canadian provinces either have lifted mask mandates or are preparing to lift mask mandates. Masks have been divisive and this issue spurred both the Coutts, Alberta Border Protest and the Freedom Convoy. While the Coutts Border Protest ended peacefully, the Ottawa Police were forced into action to end the Freedom Convoy protests in that city. Friends and family in the United Kingdom confirm that the Ottawa Police Action made the news there.

Less than a week later, on February 23, 2022, Russia advanced into Ukraine. This ongoing conflict has global ramifications and no one can predict what they will be. We do know that items that were in short supply due to the pandemic are even more scarce. The peoples of Russia and Ukraine need our support during this difficult time.
